News from the LiveCD World
The Kororaa Project has published their findings having to do with the reported GPL violation that resulted from distributing the non-GPL ATI and NVIDIA video drivers with their LiveCD.
In short, this all seems like too much bother for a Live CD. At this stage I will not be releasing the Kororaa Xgl Live CD 0.3, but will continue to make 0.2 available.
TuxMachines.org has a review of the latest Puppy Linux. As always, lots of screenshots are included.
I found the menus chocked full of applications and utilities. There was a multitude of Puppy specific configuration utilities for just about everything from net connection, wireless, sound, modem, printer, and more.
TuxMachine.org has another good review of Symphony OS 2006-05 Beta (act 5). Included are lots of screenshots of its unique desktop.
Phoronix has screenshots of the new LG3D LiveCD.
TuxMachines.org has a review of the PCLinuxOS based Wizard’s Kid-Safe Livecd. As the name states, it’s made for kids, and includes web filtereing, games, and more stuff to keep kids occupied safely.
Upon login one is immediately greeted by the Kid-Safe Welcome! It is a html page with logos linking to sites of interest to children such as libraries, pbs, online books & games and children friendly search engines.
A new version of DSL is out, some notabe additions are a C compiler and rsync.
Free Software Magazine has a great article on Knoppix for those looking to learn a bit about Linux.
Getting started with Knoppix Linux doesn’t have to be costly. Chances are you already have everything you need. The requirements are simple. Any computer newer than 5 years old with a working bootable CD or DVD drive should be able to run Knoppix.
Capnkirby.com has a review of PCLinuxOS MiniMe 0.93. The review moves from LiveCD to hard drive distro after the installation step.
TuxMachines.org has another good LiveCD review, this time of the lightweight Austrumi. Enlightenment is the window manager, which makes the many screenshots worth checking out.

Slax recently released version 5.1.4 of their amazing “pocket os” and since it had been almost a year since our last look, we thought we’d better find out what 5.1.4 was like. Much like its predecessor, it has a whole lot chocked into a small kde-based download. At 192 mb, is it worth the download?
DesktopLinux.com has an interesting article about Linux on the desktop compared to Windows. The Linux talked about in the review, and screenshots, evolved from Knoppix.
I’ve seen a lot of rough edges polished off and features added as I continued to update my system, which started life as a Knoppix Live CD.
NewsForge has another installment of My desktop OS up, this time covering PCLinuxOS 0.92. While it is mostly tailored to the hard drive install, it does give some information about the LiveCD aspect of the distro.

OSDir has new screenshots up of RR64 3.0RC1, dyne:bolic 2.0 RC, and MCNLive Leuven.
Unix Review takes a look at SimplyMEPIS 3.4-3, starting with impressions of the LiveCD.
This time around, booting MEPIS was a much better experience. The user login screen was presented quickly, I logged in, and after a few disc whirs the desktop lay before me in all of its glorious KDE beauty and splendor, with stereo sound to boot.
Tuxmachines.org has up a review of the Gentoo based Litrix LiveCD. Lots of nice looking screenshots go along with this review.
