KNOPPIX 5.0 Cebit Released

The Cebit release of Knoppix 5.0 is out. Now we have to wait for someone to purchase it, make an ISO file, and upload it to a bittorrent tracker site (which I believe is legal). The “normal” 5.0 LiveCD and LiveDVD versions will be released to mirrors a couple weeks after Cebit, at the earliest.

The KNOPPIX 5.0 Live DVD contains some major changes in the unionfs-based file system, new hardware detection and autoconfiguration, and a more “genuine Debian” oriented selection of packages. Apart from this, the harddisk install option (“knoppix-installer”) has been extended by Martin Öhler, based on the work of Fabian Franz, featuring a “live update” of specific packages from a new version of the live DVD or CD.

Other important features include safe WRITE access to NTFS partitions using libntfs+fuse. This is something everyone who works with Windows machines will benefit from.

DistroWatch Weekly

DistroWatch.com is full of interesting news in the latest DistroWatch Weekly. It includes information on the not-yet official Debian LiveCD, Mandriva One, Accelerated Knoppix, Super Accelerated Knoppix, and Knoppix 5.0.

Shortly after publishing the above-mentioned announcement, we received an email from Jun Okajima, President of Digital Infra in Japan. His company’s web site claims that a KNOPPIX live CD that boots in — wait for this — under 10 seconds

It’s definitely worth checking out the video of the Knoppix boot.

Mandriva Linux One 2006.0 Beta Screenshots

More screenshots from OSDir.com, this time of Mandriva Linux One 2006.0 Beta, its new LiveCD with installer. Putting an installer on a LiveCD seems to be popular right now, as Gentoo just released theirs yesterday, and Ubuntu is testing one on their beta-flight-6.04 pre-releases. It seems that Knoppix, MEPIS, PCLinuxOS, Kanotix, SLAX, and everyone else I’m missing were early to the “LiveCD with installer” party.

Rubuntu In the Works

OSDir.com has news about a developer looking to combine some of the hottest computing commodities available today: Ubuntu, Ruby on Rails, and LiveCDs.

I am working on a linux distro liveCD called Rubuntu. Which is, you guessed it, a ruby/raisl (sic) centric ubuntu livecd that has the option to install to your HD if your so inclined. I hope to have my build system for this set up this weekend so i can start pumping out a few betas while I tweak it to perfection.

Ubuntu Dapper Adds Graphical Installer Goodness

Tectonic brings us news that the next testing version of Ubuntu 6.04 “Dapper Drake” has been released. Flight 4 includes some major changes, including a graphical installer on the LiveCD named Espresso. This means it’s now possible to browse the web with Firefox while installing Ubuntu.

Not LiveCD related, but cool anyways, is that after installation the Universe repository includes packages for the experimental XGL 3D desktop.

CD images for Flight 4 of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Edubuntu are available.

SimplyMEPIS 3.4-3

Linux.com has a review of the shiny new SimplyMEPIS 3.4-3.

The SimplyMEPIS installer is a bit different from other installers you might be used to. Rather than using an Anaconda-like installer or a text-mode installer like Debian’s or Ubuntu’s, you install SimplyMEPIS using a custom MEPIS installer after you boot into a live CD environment.
